Why Are Runways Grooved, Anyway?

Most passengers never notice them, but those narrow grooves cut into a runway play a major role in aviation safety.



As jet aircraft became larger and faster during the 1960s, engineers faced a growing challenge: hydroplaning on wet runways. When water builds up between an aircraft's tires and the pavement, braking performance can be significantly reduced.


The solution was surprisingly simple. Runway grooving involves cutting narrow, evenly spaced channels across the pavement surface. These grooves allow water to escape from beneath aircraft tires, improving traction and helping aircraft maintain effective braking during wet conditions.


Research conducted by NASA demonstrated the effectiveness of runway grooving, and early testing showed immediate safety benefits. The findings helped shape FAA standards, and today grooved runways and high-speed taxiways are common at major airports around the world.


Runway grooves channel away loose debris and reduce rubber buildup from repeated aircraft landings. In colder climates, runway grooves also help break up thin layers of ice.


The FAA has established standardized groove dimensions based on extensive research to maximize water drainage while preserving pavement performance and durability.


It's one of many examples of how seemingly small engineering decisions can make a big difference in keeping air travel safe.
