How Small Airports Pay for Big Projects

A small airport may be quiet. That doesn’t mean it’s inexpensive to maintain.
All airports need safe runways and taxiways, working lights and good drainage. However, small airports generate revenue from landing fees, parking, leases and concessions on a much smaller scale than larger airports.
This is where the Federal Aviation Administration(FAA) comes in. Qualified smaller airports are eligible for FAA Airport Improvement Program grants, which can cover 90-95% of project costs. On a $5 million project, that could mean $4.5 million to $4.75 million in federal support.
Often located in rural and remote communities, the airport supports residents and businesses, transporting goods, supplies and emergency services. So, whether small or large, both depend on safe airfields.
